Boss Control’s BMS engineers reduce energy costs in schools, colleges and universities
This section explains how Boss Control’s BMS engineers reduce energy costs in schools, colleges and universities. Boss has helped Facilties Managers in the education sector to achieve their priorities and KPIs.
The Government’s objective for the education sector
Helping individuals to reach their full potential through thermal comfort and optimised air quality
Whether you work in primary or further education (FE), optimising temperature for wellbeing and comfort is proven to increase smart thinking, allowing students and staff to reach their full potential (HSE). HSE states: “Extremes of temperature (very cold and very hot) can put physiological stress on an individual. Lack of control of the temperature of a workplace (e.g. in an open plan office) can lead to job dissatisfaction and increased incidence of stress and long term sickness absence”. One study found that productivity increases of 2.8% could be attributed to employees working with advanced thermal controls in their workstations (Kroner W, Stark-Martin J A, Willemain T, “Using Advanced Office Technology to Increase Productivity” (Working Paper, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute: Center for Architectural Research, 1992).
Boss Controls’ not only optimises BMS for thermal comfort, it also optimises BEMS to monitor CO2 levels in many schools and colleges to keep students alert and in good health. In a DfES report, high levels of CO2 were seen to reduce the attention span of students.
Helping schools and colleges to become academies
All schools in England will either convert to academies by 2020 or be committed to converting by 2022. In order to justify the additional costs when a college becomes an academy, head-teachers and chairs of governors must demonstrate the added value of becoming an academy. Budget planning over 3 years must demonstrate capital needs which includes optimising building Management Systems (BMS).
Boss Controls works remotely with many schools, academies and universities, so despite our client’s buildings being formed of different departments and campuses, keeping control and monitoring energy consumption is simple using our remote online system.
LSIS, setting out our three priorities for the sector for the future.
Helping schools and colleges to reduce energy costs
Our clients in Further and Higher Education, like all public services, are all facing cuts in funding and therefore it is vital to keep costs to a minimum, yet maintain critical control over conditions. Energy and other utility costs have a huge impact on expenditure and our maintenance and remote systems ensure that energy consumption is kept to a minimum.
