Guest blog by Jamie, our RSC Engineer, who joined BOSS CONTROLS in November 2022
I joined BOSS in November ’22 as an RSC Engineer with a previous background in the packaging industry. After hearing about the vacancy, initial conversations with Rob and Ben were enough to convince me that this would be a great chance to learn within a progressive industry. The current challenges within society around energy supply and consumption highlight the importance and potential that BMS holds in dictating buildings of the future.
For me this is an exciting opportunity to throw myself into a new industry head first, learning from some great people, and already being trusted to work with some incredible sites such as Hippodrome, Royal Academy and Coca Cola HQ.
My role involves establishing and maintaining remote connectivity with sites, building graphics via IQVision and dialing in through SET to engineer remotely where required.
What attracted you to BOSS?
BOSS operates within a space that will be at the forefront of innovation throughout the transition to a more sustainable world through smart buildings and developing a greater understanding of energy efficiency. The company is formed of a number of highly experienced, skilled innovators who are passionate about the services we provide. I have the opportunity to learn from them, enabling me to contribute to the business through this upcoming growth phase, which is particularly appealing.
We already work with some impressive sites, from galleries to technology parks and hospitals. There are plans for expanding the work we do with current clients whilst also branching out to work with new sites, and it feels like an exciting time to join the team. I hope that my fresh perspective, and being new to the industry, can help to add to the idea pool and further our ability as a business to deliver for clients across a number of sectors.
The prospect of being able to help buildings operate in a smarter way gives me a real meaning and sense of purpose to me within my responsibilities, which so far has kept me hungry to get to work each day. Within an engineering role, no two days are the same and every day carries the prospect of a new challenge which keeps me on my toes. This is something I hadn’t found within previous companies I had worked with.
Experiences so far
Working with critical buildings requires constant contact with the site in order to ensure graphics are displayed correctly, any network issues are recognised and raised accordingly, and any questions or issues are answered or diagnosed correctly. At BOSS, the team is always willing to help, so I know that whilst I am learning, any questions that I can’t answer myself, another member of the team will be more than happy to help.
Within the role, we have a lot of responsibility for monitoring hosted graphics and critical alarms, which gives an important view of how our sites utilise the BMS to ensure their buildings are performing effectively. We are encouraged to constantly be thinking about ways we could help sites attain more value from their BMS and can work with other departments, whether that may be Sales or Field Engineering, to suggest these ideas. This creates an environment where everyone is working towards the same goals of pushing the business and service offerings of BOSS forwards.
Looking forward
The potential of our Remote Solutions department is wide-reaching, and can complement our service offerings by providing added value to our client base, allowing us to work efficiently to save field engineers travel time where possible and provide clients with instant remote support and guidance.
Understanding the capabilities of the BMS and the technology we work with allows us to work both reactively and proactively in providing the most visibility for site staff, permitting them to use their time more effectively. We will continue to build on the proactive reporting and critical alarm monitoring add-ons available to clients, providing them with concise, timely status updates on conditions within their space.
The RSC can be a real driving vehicle in advertising the capabilities of BMS by constantly pushing the boundaries and innovating among our current client base. With some great positive feedback so far, I hope the department can evolve to be a real crown jewel of our offering, working alongside the field engineering team to provide the best standard of BMS service possible.
